Hi all
Re the Child Health Checks
There has been no increase in funding to the local teams, although
Canberra have promised that there will be in the future.
The teams that come in have a mixed bag of experience, some having
worked extensively in Aboriginal health, some having no experience and a
lot in between
They get two and a bit days of briefing, including a days cultural
awareness. They have a three hour debriefing when they come back.
They use the CARPA STM and are told that they must use it and we give
them a couple of case scenarios to get them use to the CARPA STM
There is little community involvement and the acceptance of the teams
have varied from place to place
I am involved in the process along with CRANA
I am unhappy with the way it has been forced on to communities, but it
was inevitable that it was going to happen and consequently I'm involved
to try to push it in a direction that will in the long term benefit the
NT
If anyone has any other questions, I would be happy to try and answer
them
Regards
Jim Thurley

Subject: [CARPA] Child health inititiave by the Feds
Greetings remote workers,
As an ex RAN, now working in NZ as a midwife (upskilling to NZ
standards), I have been very concerned about the Howard election
initiative. Some weeks down the track it would be good to hear how
things are going.
Given that in most communities the kids would be the most scrutinised
generally, has the addition of the child health tams made an
difference. have they been supportive do they work in with community
health teams?
Have there been increases in funding to the local teams?
Do the teams use CARPA?
What measures are put in place to ensure their practice is culturally
safe?
What community involvement is there in any of this?
Regards,
Chris Wilson
